North East
The tourism industry contributes almost £4bn a year to the North East s economy and supports more than 60,000 jobs.
The North East region, covering Northumberland, County Durham, Tees Valley, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside, offers a diverse mix of rejuvenated cities, bustling market towns and pretty villages. Visitors identify the key strengths of the region as the people, the coastline, history and heritage and the countryside.
The region has adopted an integrated approach to tourism development that aims to provide tourism businesses with a simpler, more cost effective range of marketing and development opportunities
Tourism Network North East
North East England s tourism delivery structure, Tourism Network North East, was established to make the most of the region’s tourism offer and to improve the visitor experience. The Network comprises of the RDAs delivery teams and the four Area Tourism Partnerships. The network also supports local authorities to deliver their priorities for the visitor economy.
A Network Management Group, consisting of the 4 Area Tourism Partnerships Executive Directors and the Heads of Tourism and Marketing at One NorthEast, meets monthly to continue the development and operation of the Network
One NorthEast Tourism
The tourism team based within One NorthEast, the Regional Development Agency, is responsible for marketing the region and investing in support infrastructure. The team consists of closely working units covering Tourism Development, Business Development, Visitor Services, Network Development and Tourism Marketing. Based in Newcastle on Tyne it covers the areas of Northumberland, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside, County Durham, Tees Valley.
With a view that online booking will become increasingly important to the visitor economy One NorthEast has invested in Desti.ne, the most up to date tourism e-business platform in the UK. It provides attractions, event organisers and accommodation providers with online booking facilities similar to those used by larger hotel chains.

Area Tourism Partnerships
The Area Tourism Partnerships are public-private sector partnerships, each with their own independent Board of Directors and Chief Executive. They are funded by local authorities, One NorthEast and private industry. The partnerships act as the main port of call for advice, guidance and support for all tourism businesses in the region.
Although independent, the four organisations work extremely closely through the Network Management Group.
