South East

South East

Tourism is one of the South East region s largest industries. Visitor expenditure in the region generates over £10 billion per annum, providing employment for around 250 million people. The South East attracts over 190 million day visitors, 18 million domestic overnight visitors and 4.1 million overseas visitors each year.

Vibrant cities such as Brighton, Oxford and Winchester are popular for short breaks, while the New Forest, The Isle of Wight and the Kent countryside offer relaxing alternatives. The region has more castles, historic houses and gardens than any other region in England and its 300 museums and galleries attract over 10 million visitors a year.

A single regional body supports and fosters the interests of tourism in the South East region, while six sub-regional partners are responsible for developing local initiatives.

Tourism South East

As the strategic tourism body for the South East of England, Tourism South East is the only body with a specific interest and responsibility for tourism across the region as a whole. A partnership of private enterprise and both local and regional government, its principal public funder is the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA). Working in partnership with SEEDA, other cultural agencies and local authorities, it lobbies for tourism interests, as well as providing support for tourism businesses across the region.

Covering nine counties, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and West Sussex, Tourism South East is the largest regional tourism organisation in England, outside of London. It aims to support the tourism industry through offering a number of specialist services, expert advice and guidance.

Sub Regional Partnerships

Employing sub-regional managers and training co-ordinators based in each area, Tourism South East have established six administrative sub regions.

Each sub-region is led by a committee or forum, representing a cross-section of the industry at a local level. They meet on a regular basis and are responsible for developing local initiatives based on agreed strategic development plans.
