West Midlands
Tourism is the fourth largest contributor to the economy of the West Midlands, generating over £5billion each year. The visitor economy, as a whole, in the region supports 303,000 people with 28,000 businesses operating in tourism and leisure sectors. 90% of visits to the region are domestic day and overnight visits, with the majority undertaken by families with children.
The region has a strong business tourism sector, which is larger than in any other UK region outside London. Major assets such as the NEC, ICC, Ricoh Arena and Telford International Centre make the region a major global competitor.
The region offers a range of cultural and heritage attraction including Stratford, Warwick Castle, the World Heritage site of Ironbridge Gorge and ‘The Potteries’, home to the famous Wedgwood brand.
Support and marketing for the regional visitor economy is provided by the Regional Development Agency, with guidance from an advisory board, while local area support and marketing is provided by Destination Management Partnerships.
Tourism West Midlands Board
Tourism West Midlands Board is made up of 20 members drawn from public and private sector organisations to represent a range of tourism related interests.
