Yorkshire
Tourism is one of the Yorkshire s largest industries, contributing £6.3 billion a year to the regional economy and supporting over 243,300 jobs, around 11% of the region s total workforce.
With three National Parks, over 180 galleries and museums and some of Britain s grandest stately homes, the region is a popular travel destination with a range of age groups. The highest proportion of UK domestic visitors, based on overnight trips, to the region are from other parts of Yorkshire and the Humber.
The delivery structure for the region consists of a regional agency, responsible for developing and marketing Yorkshire as a whole, and six sub regional partnerships providing local area support.
Yorkshire Forward
Yorkshire Forward, The Regional Development Agency, carries out tourism strategy and policy for the region and helps to ensure consistently high quality in the way the region approaches tourism marketing.
Priorities for the visitor economy are set out in the Regional Economic Strategy and the Visitor Economy Strategy. The Visitor Economy Strategy identifies the priorities for the growth of the visitor economy in the region over 5 years, which includes the headline target of 5% annual growth in the value of the region’s tourism industry.
The Yorkshire Tourism Network, which consists of the regional and sub regional/local delivery bodies, is charged with the delivery of the Visitor Economy Strategy. The network aims to provide a more joined up approach to tourism delivery through reducing duplication of activity to maximise benefits for the region.
Towards the end of 2008, Yorkshire Forward announced that they would be investing £30 million to transform Yorkshire and Humber s tourism economy into one of the most powerful sectors in the region. The investment will be used as a catalyst to attract new public and private sector funds and better co-ordinate existing investment in tourism, which is expected to result in a £300 million increase in regional visitor spend per annum.
Welcome to Yorkshire
The Yorkshire Tourist Board was rebranded as Welcome to Yorkshire in April 2009, coinciding with the launch of an international marketing campaign.
Supported by Yorkshire Forward, Welcome to Yorkshire is the official tourism agency for Yorkshire and the Humber region and exists to represent and help generate sustainable business for the region s tourism industry.
The agency s main aim is make Yorkshire the most popular tourist destination in the UK and its work includes major marketing initiatives, high profile PR campaigns, business support and the protection and promotion of the official Yorkshire brand.
Welcome to Yorkshire works closely with its six sub regional partners across the region and together form the Yorkshire Tourism Network.
